Magazines… Now That’s Entertainment!
Magazines are still the cheapest form of entertainment that is available for everyone!
That’s what I always say.
Picture this, you visit a doctor or a dentist, and you know that you have to wait in a queue because of the other patients ahead of you, right? So you wait… and it’s just sooo boring!! You look around for something better to do like play basketball or golf, but you can’t do that inside the clinic! It’s impossible! The nurse will throw you out of the clinic and there goes the dental appointment that you have been waiting for, for 3 weeks (so you have to endure that toothache for another week or so). Bad ending, right?
So, what’s the next best thing?
Thank god there’s Sports Illustrated Magazine on the coffee table! This little saviour can take you away to your basketball dreams or golf dreams and make the waiting bearable albeit boring.
In every nook and cranny, a magazine would always come in handy, ready to assist you in times of boredom. Just check out the piles and piles of magazines sprawled out on waiting lounges of hotels, airports, offices, clinics, and yes even in your own living rooms. Now why do think that is so? Because magazines just entertain you! No matter what the topic is.
There are a lot of magazines out there that cater to different interests. We have sport magazines, showbiz magazines, business magazines, magazines for the elderly, magazines for kids. We have magazines about technology and gadgets, and we have magazines about antiques. We have magazines for men and magazines for women and of course magazines about the third sex.
The list is endless and it goes on and on… magazines about aliens and magazines about normal pets, magazines about home, and family, and religion, and whew… There’s just too much of them.
We even have concepts like “E-zine” or online magazines that can be found on the internet. We have TV shows that are patterned after magazines thus the concept of Mag-TV or magazine TV!
According to research, the term magazine came from the Arabic word “makazin” which means a storehouse. And magazines are just that, storehouses of knowledge, news, and information. It does not matter if you are reading a “worm lovers” magazine, or something more boring like a magazine about “ingrown toe nails”, what is important is once you open and skim through this “storehouse” you have learned and discovered something, even if that something you discovered is just to pass the time.
After all this ballyhoo about magazines, one thought remains certain. Magazines entertain you and more often than not, they are free! Yes, if you do not subscribe to them, you can just scan through them in your neighbour’s house, or your family doctor’s clinic. Magazines are also here to stay, they may change their form, from newsprint to glossy paper, from paper to web page or TV shows, but the idea remains the same.
Everyone, at one point or another has been saved by being thrown out from the clinic because of the lowly magazine on the coffee table. Now that’s entertainment!
